When should I start using birth control again after an abortion?

If you are taking a hormonal method, such as the Pill, Nuva Ring, or the Patch, you can start on the first Sunday after your abortion, unless you were more than fourteen weeks pregnant (in that case, start on the third Sunday after your abortion).  Be aware that hormonal methods may not be effective for the first cycle – use a backup method until you start the second month’s worth of contraception.  You are potentially fertile again immediately following an abortion.  If you are sexually active, do not wait until your next period before you start using contraception!
